Up! 3D Printer from PP3DP

The Up! 3D printer generated a bit of buzz last month. $1500 introductory price for the first 100 customers with some impressive specs.

  • 140x140x135mm built envelope
  • Heated build platform
  • Turn Key Software (my mother can use it!)
  • .2mm layer thickness (with options of .3, .35 and .4)
  • $50/kg ABS material
  • Support Structure (auto generated)

Here's Whystler's review on the Ponoko blog. Highlights include:

"The detail is similar or better than a really well tuned Makerbot or Reprap on it’s best try with no hassle."

The key phrase here is "no hassle." Reprap operators know, it takes time to develop and hone your skills to print beautiful work. Every machine is a little different thus requiring hardware and software tuning to make things "just right."

"However, before you think that it prints a smooth flawless surface, please know that it’s not like the kind of detail you can get on an industrial Objet machine."

Granted, an Objet sprays it's material more like an inkjet rather than an FDM machine that extrudes material. I've used Stratasys FDM equipment before, it's nice but does not print flawless surfaces. I am unaware of any FDM machine that does...

Last Month, I Ordered
  • 1 Black Printer w/ 1 Spool of material (700g) - $1500
  • 1 Spool of extra material (700g) - $35
  • Shipping DHL - $150

Now, pricing is "Only $2690" - not cheap, but leap years cheaper than the nearest turn key competitor.
